Understanding of Tajweed

Online learning

Tajweed comes from the Arabic root “Ja-Wa-Da”, meaning to make better or improve. Moreover, Tajweed is a science-based principle and manner that must be used when reciting the Quran to ensure that each letter and vowel point is pronounced properly. Mastery and application of a rule set regarding recitation of the Qur’an ensure that the sound and meaning of the words are expressed both in a manner as intended by Allah.

The term itself means “beautify” or “to make better,” indicating that the pronunciation and articulation in reciting the Quran should be more enhanced or perfected. Here, We will teach the most fundamental rules that pertain to the pronunciation of the alphabets of the Quran to ensure the student has a sound foundation for recitation. Moreover, It also refers to learning and applying recitation rules to read the Quran as Prophet Mohammad PBUH did. Also,  When referred to reading and recitation, Tajweed reflects on its proficiency and excellence.

Tajweed is devoted to giving each letter of the Quran its due rights through the rules of pronunciations. Since the revelation of the Quran, Tajweed scholars have been considering rules to make sure that the recitation of the Quran does not get out of its true meaning. Furthermore, This included reciting the Quran with the proper intonation and according to the rules set by the angel Jibrael to Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

Importance of Tajweed

The holy Quran is Allah’s (SWT) utterance, a divine message of kindness and guidance from Allah Almighty to all humanity. Moreover,  It offers information, regulations, and suggestions regarding all elements of life and references to the Hereafter. Therefore, the Qur’an must be read with Tajweed to prevent error when reciting the words of God Almighty completely.

The Quran is the word of Allah, an unchangeable guide for humanity, and a complete code of life with references to the Hereafter. Thus, reading, writing, and reciting the Quran clearly is of prime importance to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding. Allah instructs the Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), in the Quran to recite it with measured recitation.

Listening to the Quran correctly recited has very deep impact on a person, even if not religious, people are usually moved. It is obligatory for each Muslim to recite Quran in the prayers, but it is not the practice of the well-skilled reciters, it is the obligation of every Muslim who recites Quran to do that correctly in accordance with the rules of recitation.

Allah says in Quran:

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَتْلُونَهُۥ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

“Those We have given the Book follow it as it should be followed. It is they who ˹truly˺ believe in it. As for those who reject it, it is they who are the losers”. (121:2)  Quran.com

أَوْزِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا
“And Recite the Qur’an with measured recitation”  (73: 4) Quran

Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:

زَيِّنُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَصْوَاتِكُمْ

Al-Bara ibn ‘Azib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Beautify the Quran with your voices.”

Making one letter mistake might cause a misunderstanding or wrong interpretation of the entire phrase (ayah). Additionally, Learning tajweed rules helps us to pronounce Arabic alphabets correctly as per their pronunciation, so that our words will deliver the precise meaning.

Arabic is unique in the sense that every alphabet has a place in the mouth or throat from where it originates, known as Makhaarij Al Huroof. Also, Knowing this is the basis of Tajweed and is something every Muslim must be familiar with. In Arabic, the mispronunciation of an alphabet can completely change the meaning of the word. For example, in Surah Al Falaq, the word “Qul” (قُلْ), which means “say,” if pronounced from the back of the throat, may sound like “Kul” (كل), which means “eat,” if pronounced from the front of the mouth.

Ibn Mas’ood, radiallahu ‘anhu, said: “Learn, learn, and once you have learned, act.” [isnaad hasan]

What is “Lahn” in Tajweed?

Lahn

Lahn in Tajweed refers to mistakes committed during the recitation of the Quran. These faults may occur due to pronunciations, points of articulation, or mismanaging the rhythm. There are mainly two types of Lahn:

Lahn Jali (Clearly Audible Mistake): This refers to a change in the form and meaning of the word within the Quran. Examples include mispronunciation of letters, swapping of vowels, or leaving out words. Lahn Jali can be dangerous due to its implication in misunderstanding and misquotation of the Quranic text. Moreover, The level of this mistake is considered as “Haram”

Lahn Khafi (Hidden Mistake): This is a kind of mistake that does not change the form and meaning of the word like Lahn Jali. However, it does affect the beauty and correctness of the recitation, such as irregularities in tarteel, Tajweed-related rules, or intonation. Although not so clear, it diminishes the overall performance of the recitation.

Therefore, with Tajweed, there must be a lot of caution and accuracy in the reading of the Qur’an so that there is no falling into Lahn, and proper preservation of the divine text is achieved.

Components of Tajweed

Tajweed is based on two main components:

  • Makharij: The points of articulation, or the correct places from which each letter should be pronounced.
  • Sifaat: The characteristics of letters, including attributes such as elongation, pronunciation, and articulation.

Basic Tajweed Rules

Rules of Tanween

Tanween: Tanween means the nasalization sound of \”an\” (with fatha), \”un\” (with damma), and \”in\” (with kasra) at the end of a word.
Noon Sakinah: Means Noon with Jazm, without movement. Tanween and Noon Sakinah have rules like Ikhfaa, Izhaar, Idgham, and Iqlaab, based on the following letters.
Izhaar (making clear): When the letters خ، غ، ح، ع، هـ، ءـ follow, we pronounce Tanween or Noon Sakinah with a clear sound; we do not convert, combine, or hide them.
Idgham (merging): When a non-vowel letter meets a vowel letter, we merge the two letters into one sound. Sometimes, we include a nasal sound (Ghunnah), and sometimes we do not.
Iqlaab (converting): When the letter “ba” follows Tanween or Noon Sakinah, we pronounce the Meem letter with a nasal sound (Ghunnah) and convert Tanween or Noon Sakinah into a Meem letter.
Ikhfaa (hiding): When specific letters follow Tanween or Noon Sakinah, we do not pronounce them clearly; instead, we hide the sound.

Rules of Meem Sakinah

Ikhfaa Shafawy: When the letter \”ba\” comes with movement after Meem Sakinah, it will be pronounced with a nasal sound.
Idghaam Ma’al Ghunnah: When a Meem with movement comes after another Meem with Harakah, it will be pronounced with merged sound.
Izhaar Shafawy: The Meem without Harakah will pronounce clearly when any letter, except Meem and Baa, follows it.

Rules of Madd

Madd is also a Tajweed rule that delves with lengthening certain letters without movement (harakah) such as: ي، و، ا. Madd comes in different length which is two, four and six beats.

Rules of Qalqalah

It is to bounce the sound of five letters (ق، ط، ب، ج، د). The word produces small bounces, it adds more bounce at the end.

Rules of Noon and Meem Mushaddad

Keep the two-beat Ghunnah when pronouncing Noon or Meem, in case there is a Shaddah, although there may be a gap in the alphabet.

Rules of Stopping (Waqf)

  1. Waqf Mutlaq: It is a complete stop and marked by “م”.
  2. Waqf Jaiz: It is a permissible stopping and marked by “ج”
  3. Waqf Mamnoo’: It is a prohibited stopping and marked by “لا”
  4. Waqf Muraqab: It is a conditional stop, and a reader is given the choice either to stop or continue.

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

O my Lord! Open for me my chest (grant me self-confidence, contentment, and boldness); Ease my task for me and remove the impediment from my speech so they may understand what I say.

Final Words
